There are considerable merits in the use of DSP and active amplification as it allows extremely precise integration of the various loudspeaker drive units. It also allows crossover designs that are simply impossible to achieve with a passive system. In addition, there is another major benefit in that the amplifiers are connected directly to the drivers: there is one power amplifier per crossover band. The directness of the connection means that the amplifier can control the driver over its entire range. It also allows greater bass extension to be achieved from a given cabinet size. And, of course, there are aesthetic benefits, the principal one being the elimination of loudspeaker cables. With a Meridian active system, all that is needed is a source and a digital interconnect cable.
