Stax at Cloney Audio
No relation to the legendary soul label (though they certainly embody the soul of the music), Stax Audio is the premier manufacturer of electrostatic headphones - or earspeakers as Stax prefers to call them.
Founded in Japan in 1938, Stax broke new ground by developing the world’s first electrostatic headphone with the SR-1, introduced in 1960.

So what is an electrostatic headphone? Well, where most headphones rely on a drive unit that is effectively a miniaturised version of those found in a conventional loudspeaker, an electrostatic is something entirely different. In fact, an electrostatic headphone drive unit is effectively the same as the capsule found in the capacitor microphones used in all professional recording studios to record the music you listen to.
Why? It’s because the membrane an electrostatic uses to reproduce music (or record it) is astonishingly thin and light (less than 2 microns). For comparison, a human hair is 70 microns thick. As a result, an electrostatic headphone has unparalleled ability to reproduce all of the fine detail that is there in your recordings but rarely heard. Dynamics also benefit since the ultra light membrane can move ultra fast.
If you want to really hear what’s on your recordings, Stax earspeakers offer an extraordinarily clear window into the recording studio or concert hall.
Because of their unique design, electrostatic ‘phones need a dedicated energiser/headphone amp. Stax makes outstanding companion electronics for their earspeakers, with a range that is compatible with the different price points of the earspeakers themselves.
At Cloney Audio we have been supplying Stax earspeakers for many decades. With the explosion of interest in personal listening, a whole new audience has opened up for audiophile headphones. Back to the record label, the Staple Singers’ hit “I’ll Take You There” could just as well describe the extraordinary realism of the Stax Earspeaker experience.

The first SR-Lambda series was introduced 36 years ago and it has further developed into a new-generation SR-Lambda with its newly designed enclosure - the new SR-L300 advanced Lambda series Earspeaker.
Multilayer fixed electrode MLER (Multi-Layer-Elect-Rords) established with SR-009 has evolved to MLER 2. The finish and etching process that smoothes the edge of the electrode opening reduces air resistance and further improves sound permeability. Also, the electrodes themselves are gold plated with high specific gravity to minimize the resonance of the ultra-thin electrode.

The rationale is the development of the new SR-007MK2 Earspeaker was to provide deep powerful sound previously unobtainable in Earspeakers. STAX engineers developed a unique new electrode structure. Visible through the outer case, gold plated on the outer edge this new electrode has no holes unlike conventional STAX Earspeakers and thus provides an increases diaphragm vibration area allowing for rich and powerful sound yet retaining all the delicacy STAX is famous for.

The STAX SRM-D10 II electrostatic headphone amplifier redefines audio excellence by combining cutting-edge technology and superior craftsmanship. Designed to provide audiophiles and professionals with the ultimate sound experience, the SRM-D10 II boasts a range of exceptional features.
Stax introduces a new model SRM-500T to replace its successor of SRM-006tS. The SRM-500T utilizes a pair of 6FQ7/6CG7 vacuum tubes as the output, driven by custom-made low noise dual FET. Stax pride itself in offering a great value electrostatic driver at the best possible performance.
Driver unit for electrostatic earspeakers
Semiconductor driver unit is redesigned. New DC amplifier which FET are installed in all stages.
The newly developed SRM-270S driver unit, setting a new benchmark for entry-level electrostatic audio system.
High-voltage dual triode 6FQ7 / 6CG7 are employed in the output stage of the SRM-006tS. The well-sounding rich mid- and low-range tone covers all genres from vocal to orchestra and enables you to enjoy music over a long period of time.
The SRM-700S is an electrostatic headphone driver utilizing a fully discrete dual FET. The output of the J-FET and the large current emitter follower circuit are low noise. Accurate music reproduction is realized without missing any fine details.
The SRM-T8000 is an exclusive driver unit (power amplifier) with 4-input selector developed in order to ideally drive STAX electrostatic earspeakers. The unit incorporates a high-quality double-axis 4-gang volume controller along with XLR connectors that can connect to all kinds of analog line-level output terminals.
The SRM-D50 is a high-performance electrostatic driver and Digital-to-Analog Converter, inspired by the battery-powered SRM-D10. With an elegant all-in-one design, the D50 creates a simple solution for any music lovers to experience the legendary sound of Stax earspeakers.
