Wilson Audio at Cloney Audio
If you ask any audiophile to name a high end loudspeaker, chances are that Wilson Audio will be one of the first, if not the first names that springs to mind.
At a time in the early 1980’s when high end speakers were usually marked out by their size (think of the ceiling height four tower Infinity IRS system), David Wilson shocked the emerging high end community with his WATT (the Wilson Audio Tiny Tot). This mini monitor pyramid shaped speaker was developed by Wilson as a monitor for his own recording use, but its home audio potential was immediately obvious and it rapidly found its niche. It was soon joined by a matching bass cabinet, beginning the now legendary Watt/Puppy line of speakers.
Perhaps David Wilson’s defining contribution to loudspeaker design was his focus on the loudspeakers cabinet. Where other designers traditionally concentrated on drive units and crossovers, Wilson realised that a lot of the time what we were listening to was the sound of the speaker enclosure as much as the drive units within it. This gave rise to a host of proprietary materials of unparalleled stiffness and resonance suppression such as the “X” and “M”.
From this platform, Wilson progressively developed a range of speakers right up to today’s lineup of speakers like the Sabrina X, Sasha DAW, Alexia and the mighty Chronosonics. Over time, every aspect of speaker design and construction has been relentlessly researched - cabinets, drivers and crossovers. The speakers from the Alexia upwards all feature the capacity to time align the various drive units by moving individual speaker modules in precisely defined ways that can be tuned to the individual listening room. As such, they demand very careful setup and installation - which is a Cloney Audio speciality. On the other hand, while still benefiting from professional setup, the brand new Sabrina X delivers astonishing scale and frequency response in a package that will fit into pretty much any domestic environment.
Following the sad passing of founder David Wilson, the design and business leadership of the company passed David Wilson’s son Daryl who has lost no time in making his mark with speakers like the Sabrina X. There is no doubt that Wilson Audio will continue their preeminence in high end audio and Cloney Audio is delighted to represent the brand in Ireland.
